Fold3 Affiliate Program

Some of you may already be familiar with Fold3 (formerly Footnote), a destination genealogy web site for military and other historical and genealogical records. In addition to military records, Fold3 has an impressive collection of other sources including a nearly complete run of Chicago city directories from 1839-1917.

City directories are a fantastic source for discovering the occupations, addresses, and surname variations of our ancestors, as well as the churches and organizations that were located in their neighborhoods. The city directories have even been OCR’d (Optical Character Recognition) which means they are searchable by keyword.

Another highlight for those of you with Chicago ancestors is the Chicago Tribune 1849-1923 .

This newspaper appears courtesy of the Allen County Public Library and is both scanned and completely searchable by keyword. A nice feature of this database is that the word you searched for is highlighted within the body of the newspaper, making it locate your search hits. Also included in the Fold3 newspaper collection are the Atlanta Constitution, the London Times, San Francisco Chronicle, and Washington Post, among others.
