Abstracts of Notices Published in the Woodstock Sentinel 1856-1862
There were several early newspapers in McHenry County, but all eventually fell victim to the growing popularity of the
Woodstock Sentinel
.
Illinois Republican
(1846-1854), the first county newspaper, changed its name to the
Republican Free Press
in 1854 and ceased to exist in 1856. Newspapers in support of the Democratic Party - Woodstock
Democrat
(1849-1856, 1858-1860) and Woodstock
Argus
(1856-1857) - enjoyed limited success. This volume chronicles the birth of the newspaper in 1856 through the middle of the Civil War in 1862.
Abstracts of Notices Published in the Woodstock Sentinel 1863-1866
This volume begins with articles abstracted from 1863 through December 1866. This publication does not reference all articles in the
Sentinel
from 1863 through 1866 containing genealogical and family history information. Articles were abstractded primarily from pages 3 and 4, which generally carried local news, vital record information, obituaries, and human interest stores. Legal notices - probate, guardianship, land - are not included, but did appear regularly in each issue.
