When using this index, check for all possible variant spellings of a surname. Names are spelled as they appear in the census – no attempt has been made to check spellings or correct misspellings. The letters a, e, i, o, u, m, n, w, t and l were particularly difficult to differentiate due to several enumerators’ handwriting inconsistencies. In addition to variant spellings, one enumerator frequently spelled last names phonetically and another had the frustrating habit of making an "s" look like a "c". In one case, we discovered that an enumerator had listed the head of household’s first name as the surname and every member of his family carried the same incorrect "surname". This record was corrected in the index. However, there may be other not-so-subtle enumerator errors within the original census that may cause difficulty in locating an individual in the index.

All material has been proofread twice to ensure accuracy – names that were difficult to interpret are indicated by *. Each line entry in the index provides surname, given name, enumeration district, page number, and line number. The following Enumeration Districts were included in the 1930 McHenry County census enumeration:
